(Sept 7, 2023) Slavic culture originated around the Dnieper. As Greek/ Byzantine power waned they migrated south into the Balkans and north into Russia. By 600 CE this split in culture was becoming linguistically obvious.
Today the south Slavs include the Bosniaks, Bulgarians, Croats, Macedonians, Montenegrins, Serbs and Slovenes. They are different from the North (West and East) Slavs. Today, groups which speak West Slavonic languages include the Poles, Czechs, Slovaks, and Sorbs. The groups which speak the East Slavonic languages are the Belarusians, Russians, Rusyns, and Ukrainians.

(August 18, 2024, updated May 2, 2025) The earliest information comes from early Medieval Christian texts. Like the Baltic region they had no bardic tales. Instead all we have are early Christian reports with some native words which they took to be personified gods and goddesses. As in the Lithuanian reports these deities are actually phrases describing the purpose of various rituals.
Perun - Is the Akkadian phrase P.ER.W.N meaning "Opening the harbor's curses with revelations." He was the associated with lighting which by hitting something indicated that the thing was cursed.
Svarog - Is the Akkadian phrase ŠW.A.R'.G it meaning "A motion-power-offering resulting from the shepherd's emotional-energy." A shepherd is an emotion magic crafter involved with astrology magic which seeks to redirect fate. A Christian text from 1100's describes Svarog as god of the sun which is incorrect although the sun could have been a target of such a ritual.
Varozić - Is the Akkadian phrase W.A.R'.Z.Y.Ṣ meaning "Curses resulting from the shepherds not emanating activity." Christian texts from 1100's describe Varozić as a blacksmith or a deity of fire.
Dazbog - Is the Akkadian phrase D.AZ.B'.G "Manifesting the associations between the nest and emotional-energy" where the nest is an epithet for the life network.
Mokoš - Is the Akkadian phrase M'.K'.Š meaning "Pushing of the prodder's equally" where the prodders are the motion powers of the hermaphrodite deity Thu and the star Sirius.
