(Jan 13, 2023, updated January 2, 2024) The Gerster inscription found at a Sinai copper ore mine only 5 miles from Serabit el-Khadim. The text reads:
In Akkadian (Sinai Text 7)
(read top to bottom, right to left, verbs are italic bold)- Tu Ku RaBu
- A Zu Mu (Letter "M" here is Minoan Linear A)
- Tu QaDa Bu[1]
- Qu La'u Wa
- Astrology-magic is due to the authorities (heavenly bodies)
- They can emanate the fertility-fluids
- Astrology-magic can transform [word]
- The thread layout (life network) is fate-cursed (by the astrological powers)
This promotion of the motion powers over the life powers is Phoenician and not IsraeliteEarlier Translation Attempt in Hebrew
In 1975 Anson Rainy (Rainey 1975) attempted a translation of this inscription assuming it was in an early form of Hebrew (Northwest Semitic). Our differing letter assignments by column number are shown in red: - BRK T (bottom right upward)
- ADA (downward)
- RB HWT (upward)
- W L' H (downward)
These produced Rainey''s translation: - Blessing on
- Adda
- chief of the stockade
- and L ‘H
Problems Indicating Failed Translation
- Column 4 remains untranslated
- Alternating directions (never seen in properly done translations)
- Incorrect letter assignments
